In this article you will find information about how to travel with your dog with Lufthansa.
Is Lufthansa flying pets?
Yes, If you plan to travel with your dog, Lufthansa Airlines allows dog either in the cabin or in the cargo hold of its passenger aircrafts, but it depends on the dog’s weight and size. Your dog can also travel unaccompanied via Lufthansa Cargo.
In general Lufthansa is a very pet and animal friendly airline. You can take your dog or cat with you on Lufthansa flights. There are of course limitations that needs to be considered. (snub-nosed breeds, fighting dogs, size and weight)
Depending upon the kind of animal, its weight and size, and the regulations applicable in different countries, transport is possible at an extra cost either as additional carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin or as excess baggage in the aircraft’s air-conditioned cargo hold. Lufthansa Cargo also offers the transport of the above-listed animals and other species as air freight. Special rules apply to assistance dogs. Please note that because of local circumstances and restrictions, the transport of large animals in the cargo hold to certain destinations is not possible.
Register small dogs and cats as carry-on baggage in the cabin
Only smaller dogs and cats weighing no more than 8 kg including their carrying container may be transported under certain conditions as additional carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin. Larger dogs and cats and all other animal species, regardless of their weight and size, are not allowed in the cabin. You must register no later than 72 hours before departure. Otherwise, please contact the Service Centre up to 24 hours before departure.

As per Lufthansa one must register no later than 72 hours before departure. Otherwise, please contact the Service Centre up to 24 hours before departure.
Does Lufthansa transport dogs in cargo?
Dogs can be transported either in the cabin and/or in the cargo hold: No more than two animals (dog or cat) in the cabin (in an approved carrying container) or no more than two animals in the cargo hold (in one or two approved carrying containers).
Can I fly with my Snub-nosed Dog?
Dogs and cats belonging to snub-nosed breeds have anatomically restricted airways with the accompanying difficulty in breathing. For this reason, there are special instructions and rules for transporting these animals.
Dogs and cats belonging to snub-nosed breeds have anatomically restricted airways with the accompanying difficulty in breathing. The stress caused by transportation and/or high temperatures at the departure, transfer and destination airports can cause circulatory issues that may result in breathing problems. As a result, your pet could suffer serious health problems or even die during the journey.
Lufthansa will therefore no longer transport these breeds in the cargo hold from 1 January 2020. You can still take your pet with you into the passenger cabin, provided that you comply with the conditions for transporting animals as additional carry-on baggage in the cabin.
Snub-nosed breeds of dogs or cats can be transported as air freight by, for example, Lufthansa Cargo.
Can I fly with my fighting dog?
Animals classified as fighting or dangerous dogs may only be transported in special crates and exclusively in the hold. An exception is made for fighting dogs between the ages of three and six months. As per Lufthansa, these dogs can be transported in standard transport crates. Whether this is possible in the cabin or in the hold depends upon the basic criteria that apply to the transport of dogs.
For the transport of fighting dog breeds in the hold, please also note the information about transporting animals in the hold.
